Bhubaneswar: Women from diverse backgrounds gathered at a workshop here on Friday to explore the contours of their imagination with pattachitra paintings.
Around 65 women got to learn the techniques of pattachitra, a traditional scroll painting form of the state with a history dating back to 2,500 years, at the workshop. Pattachitra paintings are mostly themed around mythological episodes, religious stories and folklore.
" Pattachitra was once limited to paintings on the walls or as gift items. But, the interesting patterns of the art form could also be used easily as a theme for clothing and jewellery," said Reemly Mohanty, who hosted the workshop.
She runs the Reemly's Design Studio in the city that produces ethnic wear with contemporary twists.
The participants were briefed about the origin and evolution of pattachitra paintings.
"We told them about the cloth canvas and the organic colours that are used in the making of pattachitra," said Reemly.
Bela Gandhi, a participant, said: "One could hardly miss the hard work and special techniques that are used for creating pattachitra that reflects the diverse identity of Odisha. It is important for artists to come together and help others to keep the traditions alive."
The participants were also encouraged to innovate and use pattachitra to design contemporary products such as lamp stands, cushion and mobile covers.
"It is important to move out from the regular format and experiment with various media. If we do not try new things, the reach of pattachitra will remain limited," added Reemly.
The workshop was hosted by Project Eve, a fashion store focusing on women's apparels, at Esplanade One mall here.
