Paradip, Oct. 26: Flood victims of Jagatsinghpur are reluctant to repair their damaged houses before the visit of government officials to ensure that they get compensatory doles.

“We are waiting for the revenue inspector to visit us and assess our damage, so that we are covered under the government’s compensation scheme. He is expected to visit us tomorrow. Till then, we will keep the signs of damages intact,” said Raghunath Sahu, a resident of ward No. 17 of Jagatsinghpur town.

Yesterday’s downpour shattered Sahu’s mud-built house and cattle shed.

“As the damaged houses would be photographed as an evidence of the loss, we are waiting for the officials. We have built a temporary shed with the polythene sheets provided by the administration,” said another flood victim Rasananda Rout.

“Almost 200 mud-walled houses collapsed at 20 urban wards of the town following the incessant rainfall in the past 48 hours. The rainfall has also claimed four lives. We are yet to ascertain the exact number of the damaged houses. The enumeration process is being carried out by the revenue inspectors,” said Jagatsinghpur district emergency officer Sweta Kumar Dash.

The flood victims are entitled to a compensation of Rs 15,000 for severely-damaged houses and Rs 3,200 for partially-damaged houses. Besides, they are also eligible to get a cattle shed repair grant of Rs 1,250, said an official.

The assessment of damaged houses by the revenue inspectors will be videographed to make the process foolproof, said Jagatsinghpur collector Satya Kumar Mallick.

People, whose houses were razed to the ground or damaged partially, are waiting for ground-level government employees and supervisory officials to arrive at their place and estimate the extent of damage that the rain had caused to their houses.
