Bhubaneswar, Dec. 6: The students' union of Rama Devi Women's University has appealed for peace on the campus.

During chief minister Naveen Patnaik's visit to the institution on Thursday, some of the students were allegedly detained and not allowed to enter the campus and take part in the event. The incident had triggered protests by a group of students.

President of the union Megha Kanungo met the students of various departments today and requested them to maintain peace ahead of the exam season.

"Our semester examination starts tomorrow. So, it is very important that the students focus on their studies at the moment. We have asked them not to create any kind of trouble as it will affect those taking the exam," said the president.

"Some of the students are making an issue out of nothing. They were defeated in the election and are seeking political mileage out of it," she said.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) took out a rally today at Master Canteen Square alleging violation of human rights. Over 100 members of the students' group took part in the protest and burnt effigies of the chief minister.

"The remarks made by the leaders of the ruling party are extremely derogatory. We want the government to apologise to the students " said ABVP secretary Chhatrapati Shivaji Jena.

A group of varsity students had yesterday lodged a complaint at Saheed Nagar police station accusing the authorities of confining them.

The students also met the state human rights commissioner and alleged that their rights had been violated as they were confined to a room and not allowed to attend the meeting.

"We want justice at the earliest. Even though we are the students of the university, we were not allowed inside despite producing our identity cards. We were locked up in a room by officers of Saheed Nagar police station," said Priyanka Khuntia.

In another development, the state human rights commission directed the Bhubaneswar deputy commissioner of police to submit a report in this regard within two weeks. Similarly, the state commission for women has also directed the varsity authority and the commissioner of police to submit a report within a week.
