Cuttack, Sept. 20: Ravenshaw University authorities have kept in abeyance its decision to hold students’ union elections following a fresh incident of campus disturbance last evening.

“It is not possible to hold campus elections considering the prevailing circumstances. However, a final decision on this will be taken next week,” varsity vice-chancellor B.C. Tripathy said today.

Last evening, tension prevailed on the campus after a group of students protested as two students were denied admission to a postgraduate course in international studies despite clearing tests.

The two students, who were denied admission, had secured first and fifth ranks in the entrance exam held in August. The protesting students yesterday held course co-ordinator Niranjan Barik hostage for four hours.

“We had submitted all relevant documents and a bank draft of Rs 10,000. But in our place, the authorities admitted two other students, who were actually placed in the waiting list,” said Sanjiv Prusty, who secured the first rank in the waiting list for the course.

The situation, however, worsened today after two lecturers allegedly misbehaved with students in the afternoon.

“We were staging a peaceful protest when the lecturers tried to forcibly enter the vice-chancellor’s office. They also assaulted us,” said Rashmi Ranjan Satpathy, a final-year student.
