Bhubaneswar, Nov. 16: A mistake on the part of the authorities of Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) has put the career of several students at stake.

A section of students, whose semester exam results in certain subjects had not been uploaded on the varsity website, have been asked to appear for fresh exams. They alleged that though the results had been announced in May, the anomalies had not been rectified till date.

“The university authorities kept quiet for six months and now suddenly, but very conveniently, they are asking us to reappear for certain papers. Why must I take fresh exams now? Even if I do, I stand to lose a year of my studies as this decision was taken so late,” said a BTech student from Berhampur, who visited the BPUT office in Rourkela today to enquire about his results.

Incidentally, this student is among the top ranking students of his college and has also secured job offers during campus recruitment drives.

Many other students like him had formed a queue outside the BPUT office, waiting for this issue to be resolved.

“Instead of owning up to their mistake and taking corrective steps, they are harassing us,” said an MBA student, whose marks in banking and insurance management was not reflected on the website.

Sources said the university vice-chancellor, J.K. Satpathy, had taken the decision for re-examination after a few MCA students met him earlier, demanding a solution for the “missing marks” phenomenon.

“He decided that if the results of the missing paper were traced in the meantime, the better of the two performances in that paper would be considered,” said the source.

Sources said some papers went missing when the university office was moved to Rourkela from Bhubaneswar.

“But then all the papers are coded which ensures that they don’t get lost. This seems to be a conspiracy against the university by those who did not want the office to be moved,” said one source.
