Bhubaneswar, March 25: Utkal University has finalised the name for its proposed engineering college. It will be called the University College of Engineering and Technology (UCET).
“The sale of forms for the new college will begin in May and classes will start from September,” registrar of Utkal University D. Jena.
Varsity authorities have decided not to take students through OJEE and instead launch their own entrance tests. “This is because the OJEE conducts tests for colleges under BPUT and since the college will be a constituent college under the varsity, it has been decided that there will be a separate entrance test for the purpose. The entrance for UCET will be held by June,” he said.
The self-financing college will be a constituent one under the varsity with residential facilities offering degrees in biosensor engineering, nuclear science engineering, communications engineering, information science engineering and computer science engineering.
“However, it is yet to be decided if we should go with both BTech and MTech degrees in the first year itself. Members in the syndicate have suggested that we begin with the MTech degree first and then go for the BTech courses from the next year onwards. A final decision will be taken at the meeting slated to be held in the first week of April,” said a syndicate member. “It will also be decided whether to go with 30 seats or 16 seats,” he said.
In another development, the engineering college committee, constituted by the varsity and headed by educationist Trilochan Pradhan, is finalising the resource persons, who will be pulled in for the new institute. The authorities are also in the process of applying for AICTE approval and working on drafting of syllabus. Classes will initially be held in the computer science, math and statistics departments till the construction of the college building is over.
The location for the new college had already been identified and the work would soon be tendered, said the registrar.
