Bhubaneswar, May 29: City police have detained two persons in connection with the murder of a man in a rented room at Phase I of Dumuduma on the outskirts of the city yesterday.
The police have also been able to identify the deceased, who was found lying in a pool of blood with his hands and legs tied with a rope and mouth gagged. The deceased was identified as Dasarathi Behera (35) of Talcher town.
The police have also seized an autorickshaw used by the prime accused in the murder case, Kishore Chandra Sahoo, and a motorcycle from Raghunath Nagar area on the outskirts of the city. Sources said that some other persons, who were also involved in the crime, used the motorcycle.
The deceased’s family members said today that they came to know about his death from the media yesterday. “After we saw his face on television screen yesterday, we rushed to Khandagiri police station. There we identified the body,” said Karunakar Behera, Dasarathi’s brother.
He also said that Dasarathi was working as a supervisor with a contractor involved in coal transport business in Talcher town. He had left the job five months ago and was unemployed since then. He said that Dasarathi had married seven years ago and had been staying with his in-laws.
However, his brother-in-law Nrusingh Nayak said the victim had never come alone to Bhubaneswar earlier.
“Whenever he came, he came with his family. But he left home around 3am on Saturday saying he would go to Cuttack. Later, we heard the news of his death,” said Nrusingh, adding that the deceased has a six-year-old daughter.
After postmortem, the police handed over Dasarathi’s body to his family members. However, sources said though the police were able to catch the prime accused Kishore Chandra Sahoo, who was staying in that room on rent, they are still clueless about the motive of the murder.
The wife of the house owner, Kanhu Charan Jena said that last morning, her tenant Kishore had brought two of his friends and had informed her that both of them would stay with him for a day. Dasarathi was one of them.
After Kishore left the house, some other youths came on two motorcycles and murdered Dasarathi, before the landlady and the neighbours could understand what was going on in that room.
