Acting on a tip-off, a quick action team, headed by Deepak Lenka, with the assistance of Chandrasekharpur police nabbed the two criminals near ATM Square at Niladri Vihar around 3:30pm. The accused have been booked under the Arms Act.
The criminals are identified as Bijay Kumar Mishra, 26, and Manoj Kumar Naik, 27, both from Puri district. The cops have seized one 9mm pistol loaded with magazine with one round of 9mm live ammunition. Three mobile phones, one motorcycle and Rs 5,500 in cash have also been seized from them.
The police said the duo was planning a robbery at Niladri Vihar. "We have got the information about their planning and nabbed them. Both of them are history-sheeters," said an official.
Sources said both Bijay and Manoj had been arrested twice by Chandrasekharpur police and Khandagiri police in the past. "They have a criminal history. Bijay had already been booked under the Arms Act. This is the second time we have arrested them and booked them under the same act. They are habitual offenders," said the official.
Gold seized
The air intelligence unit of the customs and excise on Saturday seized about 300 grams of gold from an on board passenger at the city airport. The smuggled gold, estimated at Rs 9.64 lakh, was concealed in the wheels of a trolley bag belonging to the passenger.
Sources said the passenger, who hailed from Chennai, was arriving Bhubaneswar from Kuala Lumpur on the intervening night of May 3 and 4. "Search of his personal baggage resulted into the recovery of four cylindrical bars with holes. The bars are made of gold. Each bar was concealed inside each wheel of his trolley bag," said an official.
