Bhubaneswar, Oct. 17: A high-end motorcycle today helped police nab two members of a highway robber rang at Nayapalli.
The cops also seized two pistols and eight rounds from the accused. The duo have been identified as Khurda residents Mohmad Asif, 20, and Firoj Saha, 22.
The police said they were arrested while repairing a high-end motorcycle, which they had stolen from an engineering student earlier this month.
"The motorcycle belonged to Old Town resident Abinash Pattanaik. The accused had robbed the motorcycle from the him near Jatni 10 days ago. The victim, however, had informed the motorcycle's authorised showroom at Nayapalli about the theft," said a police official.
The police said the motorcycle - worth Rs 1.5 lakh - developed technical problems a few days ago and the accused tried to fix it at local garages in Nirakarpur.
"After they failed, they were advised to contact the authorised showroom. Accordingly, they reached the showroom this afternoon," said the official.
However, a showroom employee identified the motorcycle while fixing it and immediately informed the local police station. "Our officials reached the showroom and seized the vehicle. We also nabbed the accused while they were trying to escape and found two pistols on them," said deputy commissioner Satyabrata Bhoi.
Further investigation by the cops revealed that the two had been involved in around 20 cases of snatching, robbery and loot from commuters on the national highway.
"The two were mainly active in Khurda, Puri and Bhubaneswar. They used to target people travelling alone and rob valuables at gunpoint," said a police official.
