Balangir: Two newborn girls were found abandoned in a railway station toilet here on Sunday.
A passenger spotted the twins when he heard a cry from inside a bag in the toilet and informed railway officials, who reported the matter to members of Childline in Balangir.
Kapileswar Sahu, the passenger who spotted the twins, said he heard the cry of a baby when he entered the toilet. "When I heard them and looked around I saw the two babies in a bag. They seemed to be unwell. I informed the railway officials," he said.
The Childline members rescued the babies from the station and admitted them at the Sick New Born Care Unit of Balangir Medical College and Hospital here.
Surjit Nayak, who treated the twins, said their condition was stable. "They are now in good health, but they need care as they are infants," he said. The babies were produced before the Child Welfare Committee here and sent to the Special Adoption Agency for care and protection.
Balangir Child Welfare Committee chairman Jogeswar Mohanty said: "Their care and protection will now be taken up by the Special Adoption Agency. We will proceed further on the issue according to law," he said.
