Bhubaneswar, June 30: Tension prevailed at Mancheswar Industrial Estate here today as mob set a truck on fire after two persons suffered grievous injuries when the motorcycle they were riding collided head on with it.
The police said that the incident took place around 11.30am when around a dozen trucks were going towards the industrial estate for loading cement. The accident occurred when one truck was trying to overtake another.
“The motorcycle was coming from the opposite direction and the truck hit it in the front. The truck dragged both the occupants of the motorcycle to a distance of around 50 meters,” said a police officer.
The injured were identified as Ranjan Sahu, 30, and Sanjay Swain, 28. Sahu was driving the motorcycle while Swain was on the pillion seat. They were rushed to a private hospital in the city. Both of them, who were employees of a private company at Mancheswar, are in a critical condition.
Following the incident, local residents gathered at the spot and set the truck on fire. However, the driver of the truck managed to escape from the spot. By the time a fire tender reached the spot, the truck was completely gutted. Local residents also staged a demonstration for about one hour. Senior police officials rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control.
Local residents demanded installation of speed breakers at various places within the limits of the industrial estate.
“Many accidents have taken place in the area because of the speeding heavy vehicles. Though we have been demanding installation of speed breakers, the police have done nothing so far,” said Nirakar Sahu, a local resident.
In another road mishap in the city today, one youth was killed while another one was injured on NH-5 near Khandagiri. The deceased has been identified as Prakash Mohanty, 22, while the injured has been identified as Dillip Parida, 36. Parida was rushed to the nearest hospital.
