Tribute to people's President

APJ an inspiration, say students and teachers

Kalam, the leader

Students of Sai International School, Bhubaneswar, paid homage to A.P.J Abdul on his first death anniversary held on Wednesday. The students and teachers discussed the contributions of the great leader and what he taught the world. The students spoke of him as an inspirational figure, a great teacher and scientist. The inspiring quotes by the "people's president" were shared at the gathering. Kalam collapsed during a speech at the Indian Institute of Management in Shillong. He was 83.

Vijay Divas

Students of DAV Public School, Pokhariput, celebrated the 17th Kargil Vijay Divas and paid tributes to the brave martyrs of the 1999 war. The teachers spoke about the sacrifices made by the soldiers during the war against Pakistan and remembered their contributions. "Their heroic sacrifices inspire all of us and we must never forget the fearlessness with which our courageous soldiers fought the intruders," said a teacher. The students were told to learn from the brave hearts and their sacrifices.

Game for kho-kho

Seven students of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), Bhubaneswar are representing Odisha in the Sub-junior National Kho-Kho Championship (boys and girls), which is currently under way in Bokaro Steel City, Jharkhand. Dalimba Majhi, Mamita Jani and Nagamani Baskey have been selected for the girls' team and Sukulal Hembram, Sunaram Kisku, Pradeep Dehuri and Malaya Majhi have made it to the boy's team. Earlier, three other Kiss students - Sidhanath Soren, Kalidas Murmu and Narsingh Majhi - had been selected in the Odisha senior kho-kho team for Federation Cup (men) in Bokaro. Sports teacher of the institute Kalandi Charan Rout is the coach of the senior team.

National talent search

The National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) conducted by NCERT under the aegis of Union ministry of HRD has been published. As many as 16 students of DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur, qualified in the final round, which is virtually the highest number for any individual school of the state. The students who qualified are Sanjeet Panda, Suraj Behera, Kaustuv Prateeq, Anurag Mohanty, Prajjwal Das, Sambit Bhuyan, Spandan Senapati, Sandip Mohapatra, Smruti Smaraki Dash, Amlan Nayak, S. Nikhil Kumar, Deepak Mahapatra, Anubhav Saboth, Raj Samal, Debesh Pattnaik and Abhigyan Hazarika. These students will get scholarships and other benefits till completion of higher research in fundamental sciences apart from getting seats in reputable national institutions. "DAV, Chandrasekharpur, has been topping the state in NTSE and grabbing the lion's share of the allotted state quota for the last 15 years," said the chairman, principal-cum-regional director of the school, while congratulating the meritorious students on their success.

DPS, Kalinga, also felicitated its National Talent Search Exam (NTSE) 2016 achievers - Saswat Das, Milind Anand and Shobhyam Chakravarty - for their remarkable performance. Currently pursuing their Class XI (science stream) at the school, the students attributed their achievements to hard work and dedication of all their mentors. The trustee of the school, Mala Mishra, and principal Anuradha Rakshit, congratulate them on their success.

Enrolment drive

Children from Maa Mangala Club organised an enrolment campaign to sensitise slum-dwellers of Science Park slum and urged them to send their children to school. The children marched in the slum pockets with banners and conducted a door-to-door campaign, shouting slogans on education and its benefits. Forty club members took part in the event. The programme was organised by the Centre for Child and Women Development, a voluntary organisation in Bhubaneswar.
