Bhubaneswar, Oct. 19: Vigilance sleuths today raided six places, including the office of the regional transport officer (RTO), Bhawanipatna, Dinabandhu Sundhi and his residence in Bhubaneswar, and found assets worth Rs 2 crore.
The anti-corruption agency carried out the raids following allegations of wealth disproportionate to Sundhi's known sources of income.
The properties allegedly amassed by the officer included bank balance and life insurances worth Rs 1 crore and gold ornaments weighing around 770gm. Vigilance officials also seized Rs 1.68 lakh in cash from his two-storey house in the state capital, which has been valued at Rs 50 lakh.
The vigilance officials have found another house and a 9,000-sq-ft plot in Bhubaneswar in his name. Officials have found a car, which was registered in the name of one of Sundhi's relatives.
The officials also raided Sundhi's paternal house in Mayurbhanj and his in-laws house in Jamshedpur today.
Sundhi, a diploma in automobile engineering and a native of Mayurbhanj, had joined the transport department in 1991. The 50-year-old was posted at several check posts bordering the state before being promoted as the RTO of Bhawanipatna in Kalahandi districtin 2011.
Sundhi has been detained and is being interrogated. The agency is trying to establish whether the assets found at his residence and office are disproportionate to his known sources of income.
Superintendent of police, Bhubaneswar division of vigilance, Basanta Kumar Panigrahi said that they were interrogating the transport official. "We have registered a case against the RTO," he said.
On May 22, vigilance officials had arrested the inspector in charge of Dhauli police station, Debi Prasad Das, 46, while he was accepting Rs 10,000 as bribe.
