Cuttack, June 12: Police have chalked out a plan to regulate the movement of traffic during the three-day Raja festival starting Sunday.

A two-tier traffic system will be in place to streamline the rush on the national highway and other parts of the city, said P.K. Dalai, assistant commissioner of police (traffic) here today.

More constables will be deployed for an extended two hours at various junctions and on the national highway from Balikuda to Madhupatna Chhak from tomorrow.

The movement of heavy vehicles, especially trucks and trawlers, will be frequently checked at Balikuda near Gopalpur and Jagatpur sides to ensure smooth movement of traffic on the National Highway No. 5 between Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

Senior officials said over 120 constables would be deployed to ensure systematic parking at various business and other commercial hubs in the city.

Apart from extra manpower, the cops have also decided to lay stress on round-the-clock monitoring of the traffic situation during the three-day festival.

"Mobile patrolling by senior traffic officials will be intensified from Saturday for putting a check on congestion at key commercial areas in the city. The regular enforcement and monitoring of the traffic situation will continue till June 17," said Dalai.

The mobile patrolling team will be provided with communication sets via which they will have to provide real time updates about the movement of traffic, congestion and diversion required in different sectors in the city.

The senior officials at the traffic control room will then instruct the constables at various junctions to take appropriate measures.

The move comes in the wake of the ongoing construction work at various parts under the integrated Japan International Cooperation Agency sanitation project. "Already there has been extra rush on streets ahead of the Raja festival, especially during the evening hours, as most of the people are busy doing their last-minute shopping," said Asit Dash, a resident of Buxi Bazar.
