Time for internships

Students of MBA and MBA in financial management at Gangadhar Meher University are undergoing a month’s summer internship in several corporate houses in the state such as Hindalco Industries Limited, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited and several banks.

Students of MBA and MBA in financial management at Gangadhar Meher University are undergoing a month’s summer internship in several corporate houses in the state such as Hindalco Industries Limited, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited and several banks. The students will prepare project reports during the internship. After completion, they will submit their project reports at their respective departments and take a viva voce. The students will also submit their project reports to the organisations where they are undergoing the internships. The internship aims at honing the management skills of the students and providing them with hands on training. 

Research programme

Nikita Trivedi, a post-graduate student from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar, is taking part in an in-residence research programme at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. She is one among 18 scholars selected from across the country for this prestigious programme. The scholars will stay at the famous landmark till June 24. Most of them have been selected from IITs, Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Nikita has completed training in embedded systems and its applications, organised by BRICS. She is elated to have been selected for the programme, which aims to give students wide exposure to mega companies and organisations across the country.

Award time

Biswajeet Pattanayak, founder and director of Asian School of Business Management (ASBM), Bhubaneswar, has received the International Teaching Excellence Award for 2016, instituted by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programmes in the US. It was conferred on him and nine other management teachers selected from all over the world on June 19 at a ceremony held in Atlanta, Georgia, in the presence of more than 1,200 scholars from 61 countries. The award recognises him as one of the top 10 management educators in the world. Pattanayak has been appointed by the President of India as a member of the courts (the highest bodies of governance) of the Central University of Rajasthan and Guru Ghasidas Central University in Chhattisgarh. ASBM students congratulated him on the occasion. 

Psychiatry seminar

A seminar titled “Emerging trends and future directions” in psychiatry was held at the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) and Sum Hospital on June 18. M.S.V.K. Raju, president of Indian Psychiatric Society, told students that the requirement of psychiatrists in the country was over 13,000 while at present it had only around 5,000 practitioners. The seminar, which was a part of continuing medical education programme, was organised by the Odisha branch of the Indian Psychiatric Society. Raju said around 350 psychiatrists were graduating every year but the number was way too few considering the burgeoning requirement. Satyabrata Dash, president of the Odisha unit of Indian Psychiatric Society, said psychiatry was a coveted subject since corporate houses and the IT industry was recruiting psychiatrists to take care of their workforce. Students interacted with the guests on various issues related to the topic. 

New batch

The sixth batch of postgraduate diploma in management commenced at the International Management Institute (IMI), Bhubaneswar, last week. The inauguration ceremony was held on the campus. Students from diverse backgrounds and states from across the country have enrolled in the two-year residential programme. The director of the institute, Ramesh Behl, in his inaugural address, stressed the need for acquiring multifunctional skills and ability to adapt in diversified cultures, so as to compete at the international level and excel in managerial professions. As part of the programme, the students will be taught basic managerial skills and mantras and be taken for industrial visits and exposed to talks by corporate leaders from Tata Steel, PwC, Jindal Steel and Power Limited, Milk Mantra and Paris Bakery. The students also spoke about their expectations from the institute.

Rural development

The entrance tests for admission into postgraduate courses at Utkal University for the session 2016-17 began on June 19. The tests are being held for 27 postgraduate courses and 18 sponsored courses of the varsity. The entrance tests will continue till June 28. According to the PG Council of the university, the applicants are required to meet the respective heads of departments for any clarification on the entrance test and related issues on or before the test date. The last date for application for admission into MPhil and PhD courses is July 15. The entrance tests for MPhil and PhD will be held on July 22 and 23 respectively.

Yoga day

International Yoga Day was observed with great enthusiasm at various college and university campuses across the state.  As many as 675 National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets from several districts such as Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Jajpur attended a special yoga session hosted by Ravenshaw University. The camp was held under the supervision of colonel U.K. Behera, the camp commandant, and 15 associate NCC officers from different institutions. The social responsibility cell of Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar, also organised an Art of Living workshop on its campus to popularise yoga among the students. The workshop spoke about the unity of body and mind through yoga.
