Bhubaneswar, Jan. 20: Fashion has its own way of reinventing and reviving itself. Slim-fit jeans or what is more popularly known as skinny jeans, which used to be a rage of the 1980s, have captured the fancy of the youth, with young women in the city hankering after the “thin is in” look.
The trend, which continues to be a piping hot favourite among celebrities, began gaining popularity in the city about a few years ago.
Even since, it has been squeezing its way into most girls’ wardrobes even as they vie for a slender and taller look. These jeans, made of a stretchy fabric, are available in interesting colours such as hot pink, bright yellow, flaming red, and conventional hues such as denim blue, black, brown, beige and white.
Fashionistas are spoilt for choice with three styles of these tight-fitting jeans — straight, skinny and super-skinny.
While the straight cut jeans, also known as cigarette jeans, give you a slim look without clinging too much onto the curves, the skinny and super-skinny ones are more tapered with a firm fit at the ankles.
Low-waist cuts add to the oomph factor! Even the funky kinds with see-through mesh, all-out shreds or those accentuated with embroidery, beadwork, safety pins and chains are popular with teenagers and tweenagers.
For slender women, skinny jeans can be worn in many ways to flaunt one’s figure. A balloon or tank top, halter neck or cowl-neck tees, usually go well with it.
Those who prefer not to show too much skin or those unsightly bulges around the waist, hips or thighs can do the trick by teaming it up with a mid-length kurti or an A-line (empire cut) dress.
Footwear for skinny jeans is also an important consideration. While stilettos, high heels with straps, peep toe or even pointy toe shoes give an impression of taller legs, gumboots lend a casual and sporty look and are a great option to beat the chill.
For warmer days, one can roll up the jeans and complement them with a pair of flip-flops or ballet flats.
“Skinny jeans are very snug and give a toned effect to one’s figure. Just by changing some accessories here and there, I can wear them to parties as well as to class. It is a must have for every girl! Not to be left behind in the fashion race, many boys are also going for slim-fit pants which makes it a unisex wear,” said Ankita, a student of fashion designing.
These jeans, depending on the colour, fabric, embellishment and brand, range between Rs 600 to Rs 3,500 and are available at all big and small apparel stores across the city.
