Bhadrak, Aug. 7: Tension prevailed at Baripada Engineering College here today after a group of outsiders tried to enter the college campus and allegedly lobbed bombs.

"Two platoons of police have been deployed at the college and the situation is under control," said sub-divisional police officer Sudhakar Jena. "The incident was the result of a longstanding disagreement between the governing body and staff members," he added.

Eyewitnesses said around 100 outsiders intended to enter into the college in the morning when the gate was closed and the staff members were inside. A final-year civil engineering student said around 100 men and women came in four or five cars to enter the college.

"They threw at least six crude bombs to scare the people around," he said, adding that three of the goons, including a former sarpanch and a ward councillor of Bhadrak town, were roughed up while the others managed to flee.

One of the cars was damaged and three motorcycles were torched. The injured were admitted to the district headquarters hospital.

The college has been closed for three days now because the staff members are on strike pressing for their demands.

Srikant Mahapatra, a senior programmer of the computer science department alleged that the goons had been hired by the management to scare the staff members and to take away the bank drafts that were received from students as admission fees.

He said the staff members, who member around 360, had not received salary for five months and the amount deducted from their salary on account of EPF and bank loans had not been deposited since September last year.

The version of the college management was not available because the principal was on leave today. The Telegraph made several calls on the mobile phone of the college governing body president, Pryaskanti Samal, who did not receive them.
