Teen dies as truck hits motorcycle

The town was tense after a brick-laden truck hit a bike head-on near Raghunathpur killing the motorcyclist on the spot and severely injuring his mother who was riding pillion.

Baripada: The town was tense after a brick-laden truck hit a bike head-on near Raghunathpur killing the motorcyclist on the spot and severely injuring his mother who was riding pillion.

After causing the accident, the truck sped away from the spot. Local residents, however, intercepted the truck and roughed up its driver before finally handing him over to police .

Irate local people also damaged an ambulance after that allegedly arrived late at the accident site .

The deceased has been identified as Subham Poddar, 19. His mother Anita Poddar, 43, is undergoing treatment at the Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital.

Anita was going in the bike along with his son to her daughter's house at Kostha in Suliapada block. The accident occurred on the road connecting Baripada with Suliapada .

Following the accident, local residents blocked the road by burning tyres and erecting barricades.

They demanded speed breakers on the road. They alleged that road accidents had become a regular affair on the road as the authorities did not care to build humps despite repeated pleas.

Vehicular movement on the road was affected for more than two hours because of the blockage.

Police rushed to the site and brought the situation under control.

Inspector-in-charge of Town police station Ashok Nayak said the ambulance was damaged by the enraged mob on the allegation that it arrived late.

"The truck driver, who was thrashed by the mob, has been taken into custody. Works department has assured the local people that it would build a hump on the stretch within three days," said Nayak.
