Kendrapara, Sept. 2: The Odisha Human Rights Commission has formed a two-member team consisting of members of the police human rights cell to inquire into a case of alleged police atrocity.

"Highhandedness and atrocity" by the local police had allegedly resulted in the death of a 62-year-old man at Bhagabatipur village in the district on March 24.

Expressing displeasure over the probe into the incident by the police, the commission has ordered the formation of the inquiry team. An additional superintendent of police and an inspector from the human rights cell of state police will now probe the alleged police excesses on the deceased, Basant Nayak.

A police officer, flanked by a constable and two others, had allegedly barged into Basant's house and inquired about the whereabouts of his son Priti Ranjan, who was wanted in a case. The police reportedly manhandled Basant after they failed to trace the accused. Basant, a cardiac patient, died minutes after the raid.
