Bhubaneswar, Nov. 25: Councillors appeared more concerned with preparations for the upcoming municipal elections in the city than the agenda at the last council meeting of the municipal corporation today.
While the civic authorities, in collaboration with the district administration, are likely to submit the final voter list by tomorrow morning to the State Election Commission, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) councillors were eager to know the exact date of the election.
Sources said the poll notification was likely to be announced in six days as the sitting council would be dissolved after December 9. However, as the winter session of the Assembly starts on November 28, there is a slender chance of the SEC issuing the notification before the session.
“The State Election Commission is an independent body. So, the usual government directive that no municipal council meeting should not be held during Assembly session may not be applicable to the announcement of the poll process,’’ said a senior councillor. Many councillors are also worried about getting party tickets, as the BJD has not yet announced its core team and the mayor candidate.
