Bhubaneswar, July 16: Work on a swimming pool for beginners at Sambalpur city is going on in full swing and would be over by this month end.
The Western Odisha Development Council is funding the project, which is extimated to cost around Rs 1.9 crore, and the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation is executing it.
"We hope to be able to complete the work by the end of this month," said Sambalpur's district sports officer Upendra Satpathy.
The work on the project began in March.
"Anyone who wants to learn swimming can train here by paying the requisite fee. Two instructors will also be appointed to train the beginners. The recruitment process will begin shortly," said Satpathy.
The swimming pool is 25m long and 12.5m wide. Its depth will be 1.2m at the starting point, while for the rest of the pool it will be 1.35m deep.
There is a competitive swimming pool in the city that was established in 1977.
Earlier, the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation used to run the swimming pool complex.
But, it had been handed over to the sports department in 2015 for better management and maintenance. Subsequently, the competitive pool was renovated at an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore.
