Bhubaneswar, May 16: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has claimed not only the Bhubaneswar Lok Sabha seat, but also the three MLA seats falling within the city, thanks to the Naveen wave.
On all these seats, the BJD candidates defeated their closest rivals from the BJP.
On the Bhubaneswar Lok Sabha seat, party candidate Prasanna Patasani recorded his fifth straight win having won the seat earlier in 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009. Patasani told The Telegraph: “I thank the voters. My focus will be the development of the constituency. This time, I will see to it that more urban transport projects on the lines of Metro rail service are sanctioned for Bhubaneswar.”
Patasani defeated his nearest BJP rival Prithiviraj Harichandan. Harichandan, son of former minister and senior BJP leader Biswabhusan Harichandan, was contesting the seat for the first time. Ironically, taking part in a TV debate earlier today, Harichandan had exuded confidence about his victory.
Contesting on a BJD ticket for the first time, Priyadarshi Mishra trumped his nearest BJP rival Dilip Mohanty in Bhubaneswar North.
“I was banking on the popularity of Naveen Patnaik and it worked. I will work for development of the city’s slums, as some big ones fall in my constituency,’’ he said.
Mishra was given a BJD ticket to contest from Bhubaneswar North after sitting MLA from the constituency Bhagirathi Badajena was asked to shift to Jatani.
The second-time MLA candidate from Bhubaneswar-Ekamra constituency Ashok Chandra Panda defeated his nearest rival Amiya Dash from BJP.
During the municipal corporation elections in January, Ekamra was the only constituency with the maximum number of rebel candidates winning the poll battle and at the time of ticket distribution protest rallies were also organised by Panda’s detractors. But his win has helped him re-established his position.
“During the campaign, Opposition candidates were banking on cine stars, but our star campaigner Naveen Patnaik alone was enough to nullify their effect,’’ said Panda.
Bijay Mohanty, second-time MLA candidate from Bhubaneswar Central won the seat against his nearest rival Jagannath Pradhan of the BJP. Pradhan, who was campaigning with innovative slogan Nahin anyapatha ethara Jagannatha (there is no way out, only Jagannath can help you), perhaps, could not find favour with the voters.
Mohanty is hopeful that his constituency will have more development-oriented projects this time, including a modern market complex.
While the counting was still on, the BJD supporters started the celebrating at the party office near the new airport road. Apart from distribution of laddoos, they also danced to the beats of bhangra.
“We knew that the BJD was coming back with a tsunami-like wave. With effective and corruption-free governance, the party is going to stay in power for at least two more decades,’’ said BJD district president Babuli Mishra.
