Cuttack: Police have registered a fresh case against Sushant Dhal Samant for his alleged involvement in a firing case here a fortnight ago.

"The case against Sushant Dhal Samant was registered at Sadar police station under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Arms Act," assistant public prosecutor Biswajit Baral said.

"Accordingly, the gangster, who is currently lodged at Jharpada jail, was produced in Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Cuttack, on Friday. He was forwarded to jail custody in the case," Baral said.

Earlier, the police had filed a petition before the JMFC, Cuttack, seeking a three-day police custody for the elder Dhal Samant sibling's interrogation. "The JMFC has fixed Monday for hearing on the petition," Baral said.

Sushant and his younger brother, Sushil, are awaiting trials in several cases, including kidnapping and murder, tender fixing and dealing in illegal arms.

On February 23, Mrutyunjaya Nayak alias Miku, fired at Bijay Kumar Pal at his house in Cuttack, three days after his release from Jharpada jail.

The police said investigations had indicated that the attempt on Pal's life was allegedly part of a conspiracy to eliminate three contractors, who had refused to cough up extortion money to the henchmen of the Dhal Samant brothers.
