Berhampur: Bhagyashree Mahananda, 18, a transgender of Sapuapalli village tried to immolate herself after a man refused to marry her.

Bhagyashree is now under treatment at SCB hospital in Cuttack with severe burn injuries. Brundaban Sabat, who had refused to marry her, has gone missing.

"We have registered a case against Brundaban after Anjali Mahananda, Bhagyashree's mother, lodged an FIR accusing Brundaban or trying to kill Bhagyashree," said inspector in charge of Purushottampur police station Ajaya Kumar Barik.

Purushottampur police station inspector in charge Ajaya Kumar Barik said Bhagyashree had suffered severe burn injuries on the night on June 4 when she poured kerosene over her and set herself on fire.

Brundaban's family members have denied the allegations made by Bhagyashree's mother and said he did not want to marry Bhagyashree.

Barik said: "We are investigating the case and the law will take its own course."
