Bhubaneswar, March 12: Bollywood singer Neeraj Shridhar set the stage ablaze at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, yesterday evening with his foot-tapping numbers.
Shridhar — who is also the lead vocalist of the pop band Bombay Vikings — was the star attraction of the second International Students’ Meet, which came to a close yesterday. The singer belted out one popular track after another, which made the crowd ask for more.
The audience — which comprised students from across the globe — hummed to the tunes and gyrated to the booming beats flowing out of the huge speakers.
The evening started with Shridhar singing the title track of Bhool Bhulaiyaa and enchanting the young music lovers with his groovy steps and moves.
The live performance lasted for over three hours as Shridhar crooned hit numbers such as Woh Chali, Kya Soorat Hai, Twist, Character Dheela, Prem Ki Naiyya, Tum Miley and many more. Aware of the fact that the students were all eager to shake hands with the pop singer, he invited some of them on stage to shake a leg with him.
“This was a memorable evening for me. Neeraj Shridhar’s singing style and voice is superb. I had a great time here,” said Ankita Pyakurel, a BBA student from Nepal, who was participating at the three-day international meet in NIT Rourkela.
The meet was inaugurated on March 9 and was aimed at glorifying India’s rich heritage and preserving its beauty for future generations, said R.K. Sinha, secretary of public relations committee of NIT-Rourkela.
Besides the NIT students, over 230 delegates from different parts of the country and foreign shores — the US, Nepal, Bangladesh, Germany, Switzerland, Afghanistan and Mauritius — took part at the event. The international event included three components — technical, sports and cultural.
Prizes worth Rs 2.5 lakh were announced for the budding technocrats, who showed their skills at quizzing, debating, various sports, rock band competitions, fashion parade, dance, music and a host of other exciting activities.
Popular stand-up comedian Kumar Biswas had the audience in splits on the third day yesterday.
The International Students’ Meet was held for the first time last year to mark the golden jubilee of NIT Rourkela. “It was an idea conceived by the students and received great appreciation from various quarters. Therefore, it was decided to make the meet an annual feature of our institute. The turnout was incredible,” said Asit Parida, a student volunteer.
