Cuttack, Oct. 12: Ravenshaw University has slapped fines on two students found guilty by the varsity's disciplinary committee in an assault case.

The order also debarred the duo - Subrajyoti Ray and Akash Patnaik, both second-year undergraduates - from using the university hostels.

The order came three months after the assault on a student near a hostel on campus on July 10. The case had hit headlines after the incident's video footage went viral on social media.

In the footage, the victim was seen surrounded by eight to nine students and beaten up after being made to kneel on the ground.

Mira Mohanty of Pabaja in Govindpur police limits had alleged that Ray assaulted her son, Biswajit Mohanty, when he visited the university to check the geography department selection list for admission to undergraduate course around 12.30pm on July 10.

She alleged that Ray, a second-year undergraduate student, had assaulted her son, along with other students.

Acting on her complaint, the vice-chancellor on July 11 had asked the disciplinary committee to examine the matter and recommend appropriate action.

Yesterday, he issued the order of punishment after receipt of the six-member committee's report.

"On the basis of the committee's findings, the two students found guilty have been debarred from availing themselves of the hostel facility or staying in any of the hostels of the university," vice-chancellor Prakash Chandra Sarangi told The Telegraph today.

"Besides, a fine of Rs 5,000 each has been imposed on the two students," Sarangi said.

Official sources said the disciplinary committee had submitted the report after visiting the hostel near which the incident occurred, recording statements of some student inmates and employees of the hostel and hearing the accused according to the statute. The committee had also examined the video footage through which the incident had become public.

A case had been registered at Malgodown police station under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code on the basis of an FIR lodged by Mira on July 10. The cops had arrested a student based on the CCTV camera footage. But the varsity authorities told the cops this person was not involved and he was released on bail. The police have not taken further action on this case.
