Cuttack, May 23: General secretary of the Ravenshaw University’s students union Avilash Panda today resigned after alleging apathy of the varsity authorities.
A final-year information technology management student, Panda accused the varsity officials of not initiating measures to hold students’ union function. An Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad activist, he pointed out that the students' union function had not been held for the past three years.
“I have resigned from the post as the authorities of the varsity did not issue invitation letters to guests unanimously decided by the students’ union for their function,” said Panda.
Panda said in March the students’ union had decided to invite chief minister Naveen Patnaik as chief guest and Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as the chief speaker among others.
Panda said that besides Modi and Naveen, names of national general secretary of ABVP U.D. Sharma and other BJD and Congress leaders were approved by the executive committee.
However, despite several requests, no steps were taken by the vice-chancellor’s office to send invitation letters to them. Saubhagya Swain, the president of the students’ union said uncertainty loomed over the annual function, which was earlier scheduled to be held on May 23.
“Non-cooperation by the vice-chancellor and other officials are to be blamed for such irregularity,” said Swain.
Vice-chancellor B.C. Tripathy could not be contacted for his views on the issue.
