Student help in traffic job

Police have roped in college students for assisting the traffic personnel in managing vehicle movement in the town.

Balasore: Police have roped in college students for assisting the traffic personnel in managing vehicle movement in the town.

The students have been deployed on traffic duty since Thursday after a brief training. As many as 75 Plus Three students, including 24 girls, from various colleges have been shortlisted out of 160 applicants for the traffic job.

"The students are shortlisted by a panel following their interviews. They will be deployed for three hours a day against a daily remuneration of Rs 100. A student volunteer will perform duty for at least 15 days a month," said traffic police station officer-in-charge Prasant Ransingh.

"They are formally deployed on duty from Friday after 10 days training about the road safety rules and traffic management mechanism," he said.

Addressing the student volunteers, inspector general (eastern range) of police Binaytosh Mishra said: "Though the remuneration is nominal, you should feel proud and find dignity in the job as you are contributing a great thing for cause of the nation. The duty and responsibility would inculcate discipline, punctuality and respect for law within you," he said.

The selected students have been given a set of uniforms. The first traffic police station in the district had been opened in May 2016, and it is managed by 27 constables and 25 home guards.

Traffic police station inspector-in-charge Paresh Rout said the students would be assisting the traffic police personnel at major intersections in regulating vehicle movement and parking in the congested places.

"Of late, parking has become a menace in the busy and crowded places. The problem is acute during festivals. The students can be of great help during those period for regulating and parking of vehicles," said Rout.
