Bhubaneswar, May 5: A young boy was seen walking on the road leading from the PMG Square to Master Canteen Square this morning. Suddenly a biker was spotted riding speedily from the opposite side. He lost his balance and hit the boy!

Thud! Both of them collapsed on the ground. Flabbergasted, passers-by stopped their vehicles rushing towards them for help. Everyone screamed, some for water and others for emergency medical help.

As the crowd that gathered were readying to take them to the hospital, a group of young people surrounded the crowd and began yelling, "Drive safely to save life". Before the crowd could realise what was actually happening, the two injured men got up and began shouting the same.

The entire set-up was a part of a street play on road safety. After the scene, the actors gathered in front of the Congress Bhavan and began staging a play Accident that aimed at showcasing the irresponsible driving that plagues the youngsters.

The play portrayed the dangers and consequences of rash as well as drug-induced driving, riding without a helmet and seatbelt and how unnecessary arguments crop up between commuters, making it very difficult for others on the roads. City-based theatre group Sanjog conducted the play as a part of the ongoing UN Global Road Safety Week from May 4 to 10. The theme for this year is 'Children and road safety.'

"We wanted to keep it real so that people actually get the emotions of the situation. All of us should join hands to make the roads safe for children," said Ranjan Kumar Nayak, the director of Sanjog.

The onlookers felt that the artistes managed to create the trauma with authenticity. "I felt the boys were hurt and I got so worried. We were panicked and could not decide where to take them," said Asit Praharaj, an onlooker.

The group will be conducting street plays on road safety at various places across the state throughout the week. "We will go to Cuttack tomorrow and then move to other districts. We are selecting busy locations so that more people get to see it," said Nayak.
