Double success for state tennis player

MAKING A MARK: State player Abhishek Mohapatra emerged champion in both under-16 boys' singles and doubles events of the All India Tennis Tournament held recently in Raipur. In the singles match, he defeated Vishes Patel of Gujarat 6-2, 6-3 in straight sets. Later in the day, he teamed up with Vishes to beat the combo Pranjal Tiwary of Madhya Pradesh and Shaurya Manik of Chhattisgarh. Telegraph picture

Cricketers shine

A half-century opening partnership between Sidharth Sankar Ray, 25, and Biswajit Karmakar, 37, guided High Court Bar Association to become champion of the Prasant Routray Memorial All Odisha LawyersT20 Cricket Tournament, defeating Bhubaneswar Blue by seven wickets held at BJB College Ground in Bhubaneswar recently. In another development, Priyadarshini Sahu of Orissa was selected in the India Red team for the BCCI Women's Challenger Trophy scheduled to be played from January 4 to 8 next year.

Bodybuilder's feat

Janmejaya Mohanty of Odisha finished fifth in the recently concluded Asia Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships in Bangkok. A total of 45 participants from different countries across the globe took part in the competition. Bodybuilders from the state congratulated him on his feat.

Kabaddi champions

Defending champion Sports Authority of India (SAI) boy's and girl's teams retained their titles by winning over Uttar Pradesh boy's and Haryana girl's by 39-27 and 35-27 points, respectively in the 44th Junior National Kabaddi Championship held recently at Jawaharlal Indoor Stadium in Cuttack. In the girls' semi-final matches, Haryana and SAI edged out Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh by 33-23 and 34-19, respectively and entered the final. In the boys' semi-final matches, Uttar Pradesh and SAI defeated Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra by 41-37 and 56-27, respectively.

Women tennis players

The Bhubaneswar District Tennis Association incorporated girls U-14 category in their 19th edition of All Odisha Nalco Open Tennis Tournament to promote and provide platform to junior girl tennis players of the state. It will be held at Kalinga Stadium Tennis Complex from December 23 to 25. About 200 players registered their names, the tournament is featuring highest cash award of Rs 1.95 lakh. Earlier the cash prize was 1.70 lakh

State finishes second

Ace tennis player from the state Ansu Bhuyan finished runners-up in the Mslta-Yonex Sunrise Men's and Women's Tennis Tournament that recently concluded in Mumbai. Ansu suffered defeat from Nitin Kirtane. Earlier in the semi-final, Ansu won over Madhawin Kamath of Maharashtra.
