Stage set for grand OPL extravaganza - Actor Anubhav to perform at opening ceremony on Sunday

Cuttack, May 20: A gala opening ceremony has been planned on Sunday for the first edition of the Orissa Premier League (OPL).

The opening match would be played between Katak Barabati Tigers and Bhubaneswar Jaguars at Barabati stadium here in the city.

Besides the traditional singha baja, akhada baja, change, dul duli, sarala ghanta, chaiti ghoda, chhau, sankha mahari, ranapa and other performances symbolising Oriya culture, the opening ceremony would include a performance by OPL brand ambassador and actor Anubhav Mohanty.

“We have made special plans for the opening and closing ceremonies,” said Orissa Cricket Association (OCA) secretary Ashirbad Behera.

Addressing a news conference at the OCA conference hall, Behera said 90 women cricketers dressed in tricolour, would lead the ceremonial parade with the respective theme songs of individual teams. A laser show and a spectacular display of pyrotechnics would be an added attraction.

OCA has also appointed match observers to ensure that all the arrangements were made following OPL guidelines.

All the observers have been equipped with a book on playing conditions and code of conduct. According to OCA officials, every OPL match would be recorded by video analysts for detailed study in the future.

Arrangements have also been made to install cameras parallel to the popping crease to get correct decisions in case of run outs and stumpings.

Ten teams — Katak Barabati Tigers, Bhubaneswar Jaguars, Puri Emperors, JSP Sparks, Angul Tuskers, Kashvi Power Rangers, Cooperative Kings Dhenkanal, Baleswar Baghas, Western Samurai Rourkela and Berhampur Bhanja Veers — are participating in the first edition of the OPL.

The winning team will take away a cash prize of Rs 4lakh while the runners up will get Rs 2lakh. There would be a clash between the two loosing semifinalists for the third and fourth position.

The team finishing third would get a cash award of Rs 1lakh while the one coming fourth would end up with Rs 50,000. The man of the series will get a Ford Figo car. The final match would be played at Barabati stadium on June 12.
