Balangir: Students are not taking admissions at Rajendra College and Government Women's College in the district due to large-scale vacancies of teachers.

Balangir legislator and leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Narasingha Mishra paid a visit to the colleges on Friday and expressed concern over the situation.

Mishra discussed the problem with the principal of the Government Women's College Sushama Manjari Nayak. Nayak admitted that parents were not willing to admit their children in the college as there were not enough teachers.

She said though the college had Plus Two science stream but there were no lecturers in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology to teach the students. She said: "As there are no teachers in the Plus Two science stream, parents are not willing to admit their children in the college. Apart from science, there are no teachers in many other subjects in the college."

The cut-off mark for Plus Two science in the college has been a dismal 35 per cent which shows that students are not showing interest to study in the college.

Mishra also discussed various issues concerning the Rajendra College with the principal, Binaya Kumar Jena.

The leader also reviewed the requisites for the university status of the college which is pending for a long time.

The principal of the college told the senior Congress leader about the problem of large-scale vacancy of teachers and other staff which had not only hit the studies, but also the functioning of the college. Mishra reviewed the law and order issues on the college campus which posed a challenge for the college authorities after a professor was brutally attacked by goons earlier this year. Expressing concern over the vacancy of teachers in the two colleges of the district, Mishra said it was unfortunate that nothing had been done even though the issue was raised in the floor of the Assembly.

"Nothing has been done to appoint lecturers in the colleges. The issue was even raised and discussed on the floor of the Assembly," Mishra said. He said he will take up the matter in the sub-committee meeting of the Public Account Committee (PAC) on 17 July. "We will discuss the matter in the sub-committee meeting of the PAC which will be attended by the principals of both the colleges, secretaries and director of the school and mass education and higher education department," Mishra said.
