Bhubaneswar, Sept. 13: Student election aspirants on campuses across the city are coining catchy slogans on a number of social issues to woo students and secure their votes.

Students of Rama Devi Women's University today took out a rally protesting against use of Chinese products. The other agenda on their list was seeking support for the Indian Army.

'Promising free food and gifts is nice. But it is also unrealistic at times. It is important to understand the pulse of the students. All your efforts could fall flat if we fail to realise the thought process of the students,' said Priyanka, a candidate from Rama Devi Women's University.

Election candidates from colleges such as Rajdhani College, City Women's College and BJB Autonomous College among others have taken up issues such as disaster management, coastal erosion and child marriage in their campaigns.

'It is very important to select topics that have local relevance. We need to talk about popular issues plaguing the state apart from those related to the campus,' said Subhasish Jena, a supporter of a presidential candidate at BJB Autonomous College.

Various renditions of the 'Sonu song' originally composed and sung by Ajay Kshirsagar have become the campaign tool of the students.

Along with the popular varsities of the city - Utkal University and Rama Devi Women's University - other smaller colleges have also recreated the popular song to catch the attention of voters.

Students have remade the song to highlight their poll agendas. While student groups are penning the songs, aspiring candidates are lending their voice as well.

These videos are being shared on a number of social networking sites and also on WhatsApp.

'We have tried to highlight the problems that the varsity is facing along with the solutions that we are going to provide. We have received very good response from the students after releasing the video,' said an aspiring candidate of Rama Devi Women's University, Tanmayee Hota.

Candidates of Utkal University feel such songs help to connect with students who do not want to listen to long speeches.

'The song is very popular. So, we have made a short video on the song that not only serves our purpose but also creates interest among the students,' said an aspiring candidate of Utkal University, Soumya Ranjan Mohapatra.

Two groups of students at Utkal University allegedly scuffled with each other today. A girl belonging to a student group alleged that she was subjected to misbehaviour by some studnets belonging to another group. However, no serious case of injury was reported. Police said that they were keeping a close eye on the campus.
