A motorist rides through rain in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.

Bhubaneswar recorded rainfall of 12.8 mm, while Cuttack's share has been 15.4mm in the past 36 hours.

Heavy rainfall is likely to lash many parts of the state over the next 24 hours as a well-marked low pressure over northwest Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression on Tuesday.

According to the weatherman, the low-pressure zone has intensified into a depression and is centred about 170km east- northeast of Balasore. As a result, gusty surface wind with speed reaching 45-50kmph may prevail along and off Odisha coast.

Meteorological department officials said most places in the state would receive rainfall till August 14, while one or two places are likely to receive heavy rainfall over the next 72 hours. The weatherman has also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea.
