Add a little strategy to creativity and art becomes advertising. Showcasing similar aptitude were 11 final-year students of applied art department of B.K. College of Art and Crafts. The four-day exhibition titled Kalpana, where the students displayed their products and their blueprint to market them, concluded on April 16. The exhibition was held at the regional centre of Lalit Kala Akademi. From television sets to hair oil and from smart phones to room fresheners, the students had chosen items that are mostly used in a household. Of all the students, the works of Bijay Kumar Giri and Madhusmita Das were most fascinating. Both the students had used thermocol models to draw attention. All the participants paid attention to the promotion part where they created calendars, posters, logos and newspaper advertisements using the designing softwares. They also screened a minute long video commercial of their products. Apart from the exhibition, the college faculty members will also mark these models as part of the college curriculum. The students of College of Art and Craft, Khallikote, Ganjam, held a similar exhibition last week, where six students had taken part. Nityananda Sandha, a final-year student, gave a message about the power of the written word by displaying a pen as his product. His junior Thaneswar Munda presented his brand of sunglasses. Jewellery and bathing soaps were picked as themes at both the exhibitions.
Black robes & flying hats
The seventh convocation ceremony of the Asian School of Business Management (ASBM) was held at the Chandaka campus of the institute on April 5. About 122 students were awarded management degrees on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Pradeep Singh Kharola, managing director, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation, said: “Administration these days is more about development management. Public services are expanding by the day and so also are citizens’ expectations. Aspiring managers are most welcome to join the government and become a partner in the progress of our nation.” On the occasion, director ASBM, Biswajeet Pattanayak expressed his delight while addressing the gathering where students finally saw their hopes and aspirations materialising. The institute has witnessed a 100 per cent placement record for the graduating batch and companies such as Colgate Palmolive, Red FM 93.5, Tech Mahindra, Lifestyle International, GATI, ICICI Securities, Ceasefire, SBI Life, Bajaj Capital, Chandan Steel, Lifestyle, Future Group and Coast Liners were among the recruiters.
Quizmasters
The 10th edition of the Tata Crucible Campus Quiz concluded its journey across 34 cities with an exhilarating final in Mumbai with a neck-and-neck competition for the championship title. The international finals followed the national rounds. At the end of a nail-biting challenge Omkar Amrutanshu and Sagar Saurabh from KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, triumphed over their fellow competitors in an electrifying crossfire of questions winning the trophy, laptops and an international holiday package each. Srusti Academy of Management invited Magsaysay Award Winner Harish Hande, CEO, Selco. Hande, a young trained energy engineer from Bangalore has earned his doctorate from University of Massachusetts. As a proponent of idea of decentralised approach for spread of solar energy application, Hande was instrumental in establishing Solar Electric Light Company (Selco) India in Bangalore in 1995. He addressed the students and faculty members of the academy.
Future of hospitality
The annual day of Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Bhubaneswar was celebrated with fanfare at a city-based hotel on April 11. Secretary of state tourism and culture department Arvind Padhee attended the event as a chief guest. He expressed his opinions on saving energy and environment and cleanliness. He said that hospitality industry had a great future. Principal of the institute Arya Kumari Panigrahi highlighted the achievements of the institute. The cultural programme was organised by the students of the institute. Also, School of Hotel Management under SOA University celebrated its annual day event “Rendezvous-2014” on the same day at the varsity stadium.

New acting VC
The President of India has appointed Mohammad Miyan as the acting vice-chancellor of the Central University of Odisha, Koraput (CUO), during the interim period till the appointment of the new vice-chancellor. The tenure of first vice-chancellor of the university was over on February 27. Miyan, the incumbent V-C of Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad, has been assigned the additional charges of CUO. He has more than 40 years of teaching experience (postgraduate level) and administrative experience. He has published numerous books and research papers.
3D painting
Students of “Team Splash” of KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, made a 3D painting in front of the newly inaugurated students activity centre. Under the leadership of artist Prateek Majumder and ideated by artist Shouvik Nandy, around 12 boys and 10 girls from department of electronics and civil engineering joined hands for the creative exercise where they only used enamel paints and brushes. The painting depicts a crevice formed on the arena floor that has now been filled up with water depicting life. Team Splash has in past completed a lot of wall painting and ceramic painting projects.
In good books
The second Librarians’ Development Programme was inaugurated at KIIT University on April 11. The theme of the two day programme was “New Age Librarianship: Issues, Challenges and Opportunities”. More than 150 library professionals took part in the programme, while a galaxy of library scientists from all across the country, also spoke on different key issues on emerging technology, challenges, opportunities and management trends in librarianship and shared their personal experiences and knowledge with the participants. Speakers on of the occasion advised the librarians to update their knowledge on information science and be aware of the recent developments in the field.
Research workshop
Birla Institute of Management Technology, Bhubaneswar, is planning to organise a national workshop on Research Methodology for Research Scholars in collaboration with Ranganathan Society for Social Welfare and Library Development, Greater Noida, in an attempt to boost scientific research. The workshop, supported by Indian Council of Social Science Research, Calcutta, will be held on April 27 on the college campus in Gothapatna, Bhubaneswar, said an institute official. Participants will be enrolled on a first-come-first-serve basis where the students and research scholars will get to learn a lot as eminent scholars from across the country are scheduled to attend the workshop.
