Bhubaneswar, Aug. 4: Two films by Odia filmmaker Biswanath Rath - The Right Glass and New Champion - has been selected for screening at the Breaking Waves Film Festival being held in Freeport, Canada.
This will mark the Canada premiere of both these films. Also, these films will represent India and Asia in this prestigious film festival where a few more international films will be screened.
The Right Glass attempts to remind everyone of the inviolable human rights that each and every child is born with and the responsibility that every person as a member of community and society has in ensuring that no child is denied his or her basic rights.
Biswanath, who hails from Koraput district, said: "The film is an attempt in making everyone wake up to this harsh reality. Child labour is one among the many major issues related to child rights and happens to be prevalent everywhere. But more than the issue, it's everyone's ignorance towards the problem that worsens this problem." With a running time of just 80 seconds, what makes this film even more interesting is that it is a silent film.
The film has been screened at 12 international film festivals and won the Best Fiction award at the Srishti Short Film Festival-2015 and Children Choice Award at the Kallola Short Film Festival-2015.
However, this is the first overseas premier for the film New Champion. Made in May 2016, the one-minute silent film explores the happiness of discovering small joys.
Rath has also written and directed a number of short films such as Kar Bhalaa and music videos such as Feel The Passion.
A number of films by Odia filmmakers have been selected for display on international platforms recently. Bhubaneswar-based independent filmmaker Amartya Bhattacharyya's latest film Khyanikaa - The Lost Idea has been selected for screening at the Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival 2017 at Mississauga, Ontario in Canada.
Also, a music video by filmmaker Snehasis Das, Ghar Jaana Hai, has been selected for screening at the US Hollywood Int'l Golden Film Awards and Int'l Films Tour in Los Angeles, California.
