Bhubaneswar, Aug. 3: Those, who want to scrape away some more of the Nabakalebar spirit, are in luck.
Bahuda Brahma, an exhibition being held at the recently launched Adi Art Gallery here, is showing the works of veteran artists, who had come together during the grand event to express their perceptions of the Jagannath cult.
As a tribute to the event, the artists created acrylic paintings on wooden cut-outs for the exhibition, after the had deities returned to their abode in Puri.
Artist Gourang Bariki has created an impression of pahandi, the ritual in which the deities are escorted to the chariot from the temple. It depicts the sea of devotees at the car festival. Other works include those of Asish Pandey, Pradosh Swain, Gajendra Padhi, Priyadarshini Mohanty, Tarakant Parida and Baladev Moharatha.
Raghunath Sahoo's painting is also impressive for its image of Lord Jagannath presented with beauty. Almost all paintings have Lord Jagannath's image in form of symbols.
Pradosh Swain and Priyadarshini Mohanty have used mixed media, adding elements such as cowry shells, tulsi pots and bits of a red cloth, to portray the devotion of Jagannath lovers.
The exhibition was inaugurated on Sunday and will continue till Saturday. Many art lovers are dropping in at the new gallery to see the works. "The paintings are beautiful and so is the concept of creating them on a wooden base to represent the daru or the sacred wood, on which the entire Nabakalebar is based," said Rebati Das, an art enthusiast.
All displayed works had been created during this year's rath yatra, said gallery founder Sashi Sekhar Samant.
"Art is an important element of life. Hence, as an art gallery, we plan to host many such events to promote art," Samant said.
Along with the paintings, sterling silver and marble jewellery with golden designs, created by a Mumbai-based jewellery designer, depict Lord Jagannath's image, and other elements of rath yatra have also been displayed at the event.
