Berhampur, Aug. 4: Perth-based kayaker Sandy Robson, 47, who is on a world expedition, touched Gopalpur coast at 4.45pm yesterday.
Robson set out in her red kayak, which is 5mt long and 60cm wide. In the kayak, Robson carries a tent, sleeping bag, first-aid kit, clothing and food. “My kayak folds up and can be turned into a backpack,” she said on a retiring mood at a private hotel at Gopalpur-on-sea.
She was inspired by German kayaker Oscar Speck, who set out on a seven-year long 50,000km expedition from Germany to Australia in 1932. Robson has been kayaking for the past 20 years as an instructor and tour guide. “I paddle on the expedition for six months and go back home for the other six, generating funds for the expedition,” Robson said.
“What I really miss is the ice creams and Gouda cheese. Sometimes, I have the company of turtles and dolphins. Too far in the ocean the ride gets monotonous, and I prefer paddling closer to the coast as there is activity,” she said.
“The crowd gathered around me when I reached Gopalpur coast. I don’t understand the local languages. But, the intrigue expressed is heart-warming,” she said.
Many times especially in India, people see a girl alone and invite me to stay at their places. But, I generally prefer to stay in hotels, she said.
Robson would set out for the Chilika tomorrow.
