Bhubaneswar, Nov. 20: The state government today made a provision of Rs 5 crore in the supplementary budget for the current fiscal for the installation of CCTVs at the Jagannath temple in Puri and Rs 10 crore to introduce the rapid transit system in Bhubaneswar.

Finance minister Pradip Kumar Amat today placed the supplementary budget worth Rs 4,502.34 crore was in the Assembly.

The need for installation of the CCTVs at the Jagannath temple was felt in view of the security threat to the ancient shrine. In April, two Indian Mujahideen operatives had confessed before Delhi police that they had visited Puri and Bhubaneswar to plan an attack on the temple.

The security threat holds good in view of the fact that Puri is a coastal town and vulnerable to terrorist attacks as there are huge gaps in security along the coast. The temple town is expected to have a congregation of 50 lakh devotees during the Nabakalebar festival (change of idols of Lord Jagannath and His siblings) scheduled in July next year.

Similarly, there is a need for bus rapid transit system in Bhubaneswar in view of the bourgeoning population and rapid expansion of the city limits. The state government has, therefore, decided to run high-speed buses on some selected routes under the system.

Presenting the budget, the finance minister said it was necessary to finance the execution of new schemes and programmes announced after formulation of the annual budget and for the additional requirement to meet the expenses related to relief, repair, restoration and compensation to farmers in the cyclone-hit areas.

In June, annual budget to the tune of Rs 80,139.58 crore was presented in the Assembly. With presentation of the supplementary budget, the total proposed budgetary allocation has gone up to Rs 84,641.92 crore, said the finance minister.
