Rush for commerce course at Ravenshaw

Cuttack, July 1: There seems to be a rush among students to opt for the post-graduate commerce course offered by the Ravenshaw University, which have received applications from nearly 1,000 students against the allotted 64 seats for admission into this stream.

According to university authorities, there is stiff competition among the students to get admissions into the post-graduate commerce course this year.

Usually, around 400-500 applications are received for the said subject every year.

On the other hand, there has been a gradual decline in the interest for history as only 150 applications have been received for the 64 allotted seats.

At present, university authorities are busy evaluating answer sheets of the entrance examination held for the 24 subjects under the post-graduate category. The entrance examination for all 24 subjects was held from June 25 to 27.

Ravenshaw University offers post-graduation courses in 24 subjects that includes applied geography (16 seats), botany (29), bio-technology (24), chemistry (14), commerce (64), computer science (32), economics (84), education (40), English (104), electronics and telecommunications (60), geology (16), Hindi (32), history (64), information technology and management (24), journalism and mass communication (60), mathematics (48), Oriya (64), philosophy (32), physics (56), political science (64), psychology (32), rural development (40),sociology (32) and zoology (16). Out of the 24 post-graduate courses, 18 are regular while six are self-financing courses. Students are now vying for admissions in commerce, botany, geology, rural development and English, which are in demand.

“The evaluation of entrance examination papers is going on and we hope to publish the merit list of individual subjects on the university website by July 10 after verification of the individual application forms by July 7,” said Pradip Kumar Mohapatra, convener of the admission committee.

Admissions into various post-graduate courses are likely to begin from the third week of July. “I am tense for my admissions in commerce as only limited seats are available and many students apply for the course,” said Vilash Agarwal, a student.

According to university officials, students interested to take admissions need to go through the university website from July 7 to 10 to know their results and the final merit list for the admissions in various courses.

In case of any doubt, students have been advised to contact the concerned authorities for immediate solutions.

Students should bring at least three passport size photographs, original mark sheets and certificates and other necessary certificates. Students seeking admissions under various reservation quotas, including scheduled caste, scheduled tribe and physically handicapped, are required to bring certificates to substantiate their claim.

Admissions in the first selection for the under-graduate courses, including arts (512), science (288) and commerce (512), have already begun at the university.

Cut-off marks for admissions into Arts stream is 60 per cent for the general students, 40.33 per cent for scheduled tribe (ST) students and 40.33 per cent for scheduled caste (SC) students. Similarly, cut-off marks for science is 79.83 per cent for general students, 69.67 per cent for scheduled caste students and 62.35 per cent for scheduled tribe students.

The cut-off marks for commerce stream is 75.5 per cent for general students, 68.8 percent for the students belonging to scheduled caste and 64.65 per cent for scheduled tribe category.

University sources said that a total of around 7,000 applications have been received from various candidates for admissions into various post graduate courses and around 6,000 applications have been received for under-graduate courses.
