Berhampur: The Surat district administration in Gujarat has extended financial help of Rs 3 lakh to Sanjay Pradhan, 41, a resident of Barida village in Ganjam district, who lost both his eyes in an acid attack one year ago.

Sanjay's family members, who are literally starving, on Friday received the money from the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) of Surat. On the occasion, Sanjay's family members thanked Ganjam DLSA secretary Gundicha Samantasinhara for his constant support.

Sanjay has been admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for a plastic surgery on his face and the DLSA of Ganjam has helped him get free treatment. Sanjay suffered severe burn injury on his chest, neck and face due to the acid attack.

Sanjay was working as a labourer at a textile mill in Surat. "My husband lost both his eyes and suffered severe injuries after Punamchandar Gaund threw acid on him at Pandol in Surat's Chowk Bazaar on February 19 last year," said his wife Saraswati.

Surat police had arrested Gaund and Sanjay was first admitted at a private hospital in Surat. Samantasinhara is also trying to ensure another Rs 1 lakh for Sanjay from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.
