Rock garden for geological studies

The foundation stone of a rock garden, which will come up on the premises of Utkal University, was laid recently.

Bhubaneswar, April 9: The foundation stone of a rock garden, which will come up on the premises of Utkal University, was laid recently.

The proposed garden will be set up by Essel Mining and Industries Limited (EMIL), a unit of the Aditya Birla Group, and will come up in the department of geology of the university.

It will be designed to be one of the best open geological laboratories in the country and will attempt to enliven the concept of geology textbook. It will provide practical approach in field measurement, mapping techniques, and identification of rocks, minerals, ores and fossils.

"The lab shall not only beautify the ambience but also enhance the teaching standards catering to the needs of postgraduate and PhD students of the department. It will also provide a beautiful educative spot for students of the university and visitors on the campus," said vice-chancellor of the varsity Asoka Kumar Das.

The project will be completed in three months. The garden will promote Odisha's rich geological heritage in a parkland setting showcasing diversity of rocks, and minerals that contribute significantly to the nation's landscapes, heritage and prosperity.

The CEO of EMIL, Ashok Kumar Bal, said the company would continue its support in the field of socio-academic development of the state.

This apart, the varsity has begun its admission process for postgraduate, M.Phil and PhD courses. The online application process started on April 1. Applicants can get the details from the website of the varsity.

Besides, around 70 colleges of Odisha will get World Bank funding of Rs 10 crore for a period of five years to implement development works. At a meeting held in Utkal University recently, principals of 126 colleges were asked to develop an "Institutional Development Plan" to be submitted to the World Bank. Colleges, including 20 in tribal and backward districts, with best plans will be provided the funding for infrastructure development.

The World Bank has asked 12 government-run universities to help the colleges prepare the plan. The universities will also be provided World Bank funding to develop centres of excellence.
