Bhubaneswar: The Congress and the BJP on Tuesday accused the state government of shielding facts in connection with alleged gang-rape at Kunduli in Koraput district.

Both Opposition parties have been staging demonstrations since the victim committed suicide on January 22. They also targeted the crime branch and accused the agency of trying to tamper with evidence.

BJP spokesperson Lekhashree Samantsinghar questioned the role of the State Forensic Science Laboratory, which functions under the crime branch.

"The discrepancy in the victim's forensic report has raised questions on the police and the state government as well as the lab's independent functioning. We demand a CBI probe and the sample to be sent to the Central Forensic Laboratory within seven days," she said.

A draft report from the forensic lab stated that there was semen in the victim's innerwear. The final report, however, did not have the same findings. The lab authorities have since issued two clarifications claiming that the forensic report of the victim was 100 per cent accurate and no semen was detected in the final report which was conducted through the DNA test. Director-general of police R.P. Sharma also ordered a crime branch probe into the alleged discrepancies of the forensic report.

The Congress also threatened to gherao Naveen Nivas, the residence of chief minister Naveen Patnaik, over the issue.

"The police are working hand in glove with the state government to hide facts and this is the reason that the crime branch went to Kunduli on Monday. We demand that the state government make the forensic report public. If the government fails to arrest the accused, we will intensify our agitation," said Youth Congress working president Lokanath Maharathy.

On October 10, a Class IX student was allegedly gang-raped at gunpoint by four uniformed personnel in the Lanjiguda forest. However, the state government had ruled out the gang-rape. But it simultaneously ordered judicial and crime branch probe.

The girl hanged herself on January 22.

Recently, BJP leader and Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan demanded a CBI inquiry into the entire episode.

He cited how the Haryana government had handed over a similar case to the CBI and dared Naveen to order a CBI probe into the case.
