Bhubaneswar, Feb. 18: Ibirisingh village in Jagatsinghpur district witnessed post-poll violence late last night and tension erupted at Athgarh in Cuttack district this evening, even as repoll in 36 polling booths in six districts was held peacefully today.

Alleging that supporters of a victorious BJD candidate set three shops on fire late last night, Congress activists staged a dharna demanding arrest of the accused.

Police arrested four BJD workers today on the charge of torching three roadside shops. The arrested included Sukant Das, the husband of a sarpanch candidate in the panchayat election. They were remanded in jail custody after a local court rejected their bail plea.

Tension erupted in Berhampur village of Anantpur panchayat in Athgarh Assembly constituency after a group of people allegedly roughed up local BJD MLA Ranendra Pratap Swain and his supporters when he came to the village today. The village is going to the polls tomorrow.

The BJP today accused additional director general of police (law and order) Binayananda Jha of showing undue favours to BJD in the ongoingpoll. A delegation of the party led by BJP spokesperson Sajjan Sharma met the State Election Commission officers today.

Today, repolling was held at 36 booths across the state where voting for the first phase panchayat polls was cancelled on February 13 in view of disturbances and violence related to the rural poll.

In politically sensitive Kendrapara district, repolling was conducted at 11 booths. Repolling was held at two booths in Balasore district, 16 booths in Cuttack, five in Jajpur, 11 in Kendrapara and one in Nuapada.

Voting will be held tomorrow in the fourth phase for 124 zilla parishad seats, 1,324 sarpanch and as many panchayat samiti members posts and 18,876 ward member posts in 28 districts. Over 50.61 lakh voters are expected to exercise their franchise. Security arrangements were tightened in Maoist-hit areas for tomorrow’s polling including surveillance with the help of drones.
