Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday launched an online registration service for senior citizens in the twin cities under the senior citizen security cell of the police.
Users are required to visit the common application portal of the state government (www.lokaseba-odisha.in) and fill in their details to register themselves. Police said that the link of the portal would also be uploaded on the home page of the commissionerate police.
The senior citizen security cell, which started in February 2009, initially covered five police stations each in Cuttack in Bhubaneswar. They now cover all 19 police stations in Bhubaneswar and 17 police stations in Cuttack. The police said 11,335 senior citizens, including 6,836 from Bhubaneswar, have been registered by November end.
Speaking on the occasion, chief minister Naveen Patnaik asked the police to work for providing prompt solutions towards the grievances of senior citizens, women and children.
"The commissionerate police has achieved success and have also faced several challenges in last 10 years. I am hopeful that the commissionerate police will continue its effort to provide expeditious service to the citizens," said Naveen.
The system was introduced in view of crimes against the elderly in the twin cities in the past. Under the system, nodal and assistant nodal officers of the cells are assigned to visit the houses of registered persons regularly, ascertain the physical security aspects of their houses and advise them to install protective grill fencing, door chains, alarm bell and other safety measures at their houses.
"The number of registrations was highest in 2017 with 3,347 people signing up. We have also provided one motorcycle and mobile phone to nodal officers of the cell for smooth functioning of the system," said police commissioner Y.B. Khurania.
"The registration process will be simplified online with people not needing to go physically for it. We hope most senior citizens will registering themselves," said president of the Federation of Senior Citizens Association of Odisha Krupasindhu Sahoo.
