Berhampur, July 21: Two women — 20-year-old Martha Majhi and 18-year-old Merry Majhi — of the Basadara divisional committee of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) today surrendered before police in Gajapati district.
They also made several allegations against their leaders Sabyasachi Panda, Azad, and Dandapani Mohanty, a mediator who had secured the release of the former Malkangiri R. Vineel Krishna from the custody of the Naxals.
“Their disclosure had led to recovery of arms and ammunition from three different places,” said Gajapati superintendent of police Sarthak Sadangi. The police raided Gerjong hills near Lumdong village, Putripada forest, and Purunapani forest.
“We seized two eight-mm single-shot pistols, eight round ammunition, two SBML (country-made) guns, five clamour mines, one grenade, 10 electrical detonators, one kg explosive ammonium nitrate, three batteries, charger and polythene,” he said.
“Martha Majhi alias Minita belongs to Ludungi village in Mandimera gram panchayat and Merry Majhi alias Kabita belongs to Lumdong village in Khariguda gram panchayat, both under Adaba police station limits in Gajapati. They alleged physical and mental exploitation of the female cadre,” Sadangi said.
Merry joined the Naxalite movement during 2008. She came in contact with the rebels during the inauguration of a pillar at Mandimera. Later, she came in contact with Azad and took arms training at Baliganda. She was provided with one SLR and ammunition. She returned to her native village during December 2010. Merry was an active cadre in Azad’s group.
Martha joined the Naxalites after she attended a meeting at Mandrabaju near Betaguda in 2007 and had come in contact with Sabyasachi Panda, Azad and some other top cadres. Martha took arms training at Gocha by Krishna, Bijapur by Azad and Nepidi by Sabyasachi Panda, said the police superintendent.
