Bhubaneswar, Sept. 23: Two motorcycle-borne goons today looted Rs 1.2 lakh from an accountant of a Cuttack-based real estate company by conning him near Damana Square in Chandrasekharpur police station limits.
The incident took place around 11.30am when the accountant, identified as Sabyasachi Swain, was waiting at the bus stop after withdrawing the cash from a nearby bank.
"I was waiting at the bus stop when suddenly something fell on me. Before I could understand what happened, the two accused, who were driving past me, said that someone had puked on me from a running bus. Later, one of them was even helping me clean my shirt, but in the meantime, his aide snatched away the cash bag and escaped from the spot," alleged the victim.
He later lodged a complaint with the Chandrasekharpur police station.
The police suspect the involvement of an inter-state gang, which used to steal money and valuables from people on roads by dropping currency notes to distract the victims.
Today's incident has emerged as a challenge for the cops, who are still clueless about Tuesday's incident in which a private collection agent was attacked and robbed off cash worth Rs 15 lakh near Big Bazar, Patia.
The victim, Biranchi Barik was on his way to deposit the cash in a nationalised bank at Kanan Vihar when the goons struck. Last December, too, Barik had allegedly been looted of more than Rs 10 lakh.
The police suspect involvement of gangs outside the capital city in the Patia incident.
"The victim is still in trauma and is not being able to recall the entire incident. We are waiting for him to become stable," said a senior police official. The cops are also trying to ascertain whether a same group is involved in all the incidents.
"Investigation in both Patia and today's cases are under way and we are hopeful of cracking them shortly," said deputy commissioner of police, Satyabrata Bhoi.
On the other hand, residents raised concern over frequent cases of loot and snatching.
"With the arrival of festive season, the goons have become active and cases of loot and snatching have become a regular affair. The cops should intensify its drive to nab the criminals," said Ajay Sahoo, a resident.
