Bhubaneswar, June 23: After much delay, a foot overbridge at Jayadev Vihar may finally see the light of the day.
An official of the company executing the project said it would be completed within a month or before rath yatra.
While the stairs leading to the bridge on both sides of the Jayadev Vihar-Nandankanan Road is complete, the construction company is waiting for the weather to improve to fix the overhead platform.
"The construction of the platform is complete and it is lying in our yard located nearby. We are waiting for the weather to improve to complete colouring and polishing of the frames. Once the rain stops, we will complete them," said Manish Agarwal, who works for the private construction firm executing the project. He said after colouring and polishing are done, the overhear walkway would be fixed.
"If the weather favours, we are planning to finish it within a month or before the rath yatra," said an official of the firm.
The walkways that are in the yards need to be carried to the spot and heavy cranes would be placed on the road for this purpose.
The roads need to be closed to traffic at that time. Therefore, the firm would undertake the work at night when the traffic is thin.
Earlier on June 13 and 14, the police had to block the roads from both sides from 11pm to 5am to fix the stairways.
"We regulated traffic movement at this spot for two nights earlier this month and the work was smoothly done. When they start the second phase, we will again help them," said Jatindra Panda, assistant commissioner of police (ACP), traffic.
This foot overbridge was proposed in 2011 on local self-government day, but the work started in 2014. The cost of the project is around Rs 2 crore. It will help pedestrians cross the busy road safely.
"We are waiting for this bridge to start functioning. They have taken a lot of time. We hope they finish it fast," said Snigdha Senapati, a commuter.
It's noteworthy that two other foot overbridges planned near Ramadevi Women's College and Master Canteen Square have been halted due to various reasons.
