Bhubaneswar: Members of a voluntary organisation have met officials of the Intellectual Property India in Chennai and demanded that it should withdraw the geographical indication (GI) tag given to the Banglar Rasogolla.

The Intellectual Property of India has assured them to look into the issue.

Ramesh Chandra Sahu of the Regional Development Trust, with help of the Chennai-based Utkal Association of Madras, submitted the memorandum on Wednesday.

Challenging the GI tag given to Banglar Rasogolla, the association said the sweet had its origin in Odisha and it dated back to more than 800 years. The association said that the sweet also had links to Jagannath culture. It said Odias had been offering the sweet at the Jagannath temple in Puri as a part of rituals since the 12th century.

Besides these records, it has also been recorded in the Madala Panji and other literature of the state. In his epic work Dandi Ramayan, poet Balaram Das has also written about the rasagolla.

In another development, a petition was filed in Orissa High Court last week challenging the GI tag given to Banglar Rasogolla. After Bengal got the GI tag and its chief minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted about it, Odisha has reacted sharply and demanded the tag for its Jagannath Rasagolla. It has also constituted a committee to look into the issue and apply for the GI tag.
