Bhubaneswar, April 4: A 19-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by her landlord and his friend at Tarini Sahi near Vani Vihar today.

Sources said the incident had taken place this afternoon within the Saheed Nagar police station limits when the victim’s husband was away from home. The accused persons sexually assaulted her and forcefully poured liquor into her mouth.

The police said the landlady, Kanchan Patra, 38, who was also involved in the crime, was working as a home guard. She had been discharged from duty.

The police have detained Kanchan and her husband, Amitav Satpathy, who is a priest. An official in Mahila police station said they had got a complaint in this regard and were looking into the matter.

The victim’s 25-year-old husband, who is a native of Delang in Puri district, alleged that both the accused persons had raped his wife, taking the opportunity of his absence. He said he was at his workplace when he had received a call from the landlady who told him not to come home for lunch. Becoming suspicious on receiving such a message, he tried to contact his wife and called up her number thrice, but did not get any reply.

“I rushed home and saw both the accused persons were sexually assaulting my wife. Seeing me, both of them fled from the spot. When I went to the landlady, she also tried to run away from the house. I then informed the police about the matter,” said the victim’s husband, who works as a daily labourer.

“We are investigating into the matter,” said a police officer.
